Rwanda is a small country in East Africa, known for its cleanliness and peace. Its capital, Kigali, is safe and modern. Many foreign students choose Rwanda because the people are polite and welcoming. Rwanda has a growing economy and strong schools. The country even banned plastic bags to keep the environment clean. English has been the main language in schools since 2008, so Nigerian students find it easy to study there. Living costs in Rwanda are low – a student can live on about 400,000 Rwandan francs per month (around US$280 at current rate). Many students mention that tuition fees in Rwanda are also affordable. For example, one student noted annual fees of around US$500 at a Rwandan university

Housing and food are cheap. Kigali rents for students range from about US$100 to US$200 per month. Food like beans, rice, or local dishes (cassava leaves, sambusas) is low-cost

Most classes are in English now. Some locals speak Kinyarwanda or French, but you can get by easily. Learning a few Kinyarwanda words can help for daily life.
Rwanda has both public and private universities. Some of the main schools are:
The largest public university with campuses in Kigali and other cities. UR offers programs in science, engineering, business, health, and more. It is ranked as Rwanda’s top university. UR also hosts the Mastercard Foundation Scholars program for African students
A private university in Kigali that focuses on leadership and innovation. ALU’s courses use modern teaching methods and link to global networks.
A branch of the US-based tech university, located in Kigali. CMU-Africa has strong programs in computer science and engineering.
Located outside Kigali, UGHE specializes in health and public health education. It partners with health organizations and offers master’s and doctoral programs.
Private faith-based schools in Kigali. They offer degrees in business, medicine, social sciences and more. AUCA, for example, attracts many international students including Nigerians.
These are newer universities in Kigali and Rwamagana (near Kigali) with programs in law, management, journalism, engineering, etc.
To join a Rwandan university, you need to meet the school’s entry rules and get your qualifications approved. In general:
High school grades: You should have a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or equivalent. For example, the University of Rwanda requires at least 5 “O” Level passes and 2 “A” Level passes (or equivalent). Nigerian students will use WAEC or NECO exam results.
Equivalency certificate: Since you studied outside Rwanda, you must get your certificates recognized. This means obtaining an equivalence certificate from the Rwanda Education Board (for high school qualifications) and the Higher Education Council (for any college or university study). In practice, you apply on the Rwanda e-government site (Irembo) for equivalence. You will need to upload notarized copies of your transcripts, diploma, admission letter, and passport.
Application form: Most universities ask you to fill out an application form online or on paper. For example, UR requires international applicants to register online and get a student ID number before applying. Attach copies of your certificates, passport, ID, and any exam scores.
English test: Some universities may test your English skills, since courses are taught in English.
Nigerians travelling to Rwanda for study get a visa on arrival, which is free. The visa validity is 30 days. You should have a passport valid for at least 6 more months when you enter.
Prepare your documents: Bring original and notarized copies of your school certificates (WAEC, NECO, etc.), transcripts, birth certificate, and passport. Get a Nigerian police clearance early.
Get a visa-ready: Your passport should be valid 6+ months. Keep copies of your visa and permit documents.
Budget wisely: Carry some US dollars or naira to exchange (credit card payments are not always accepted). Open a local bank account (many Nigerian banks like GT Bank or Ecobank are in Kigali.
Stay connected: Have a working cellphone (buy a local SIM with data). Use apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps and Uber (it works in Kigali) to navigate and communicate.
Academic life: Attend orientation and lectures on time. Rwandan universities expect discipline and attendance. Use university libraries or study halls.
Learn some Kinyarwanda: Simple greetings (e.g. Muraho for hello) go a long way. People appreciate the effort.
Explore safely: Rwanda has beautiful sights (Lake Kivu, Nyungwe Forest, Volcanoes Park with gorillas). Travel in groups or with licensed guides, and always follow park rules.
Respect customs: Rwandans value politeness and community. Avoid loud arguments in public. Dress neatly, especially at school or official places.
